How to Build Your Own Streetwear Wardrobe Without Going Broke

Skinny jeans have been deservedly banished into the depths of hell, and now streetwear is here to stay. It can be flashy, understated, vintage, or futuristic, but more often than not, it combines comfortable functionality with avant-garde sensibilities.

So, I want to lend a hand to anyone out there who admires the style from afar but doesn’t yet have the confidence to put together something that combines their personal style with the streetwear vibe, all without breaking the bank.

What is Streetwear?

Streetwear owes its origins to the early New York City hip-hop scene, Californian skate culture in the 1980s, and Japanese street culture in the latter half of the 20th Century. The style was pioneered by Shawn Stussy, who sold vibrant graphic t-shirts in the early 1990s, and Dapper Dan, who blended designer logos with hip-hop-inspired street styles in his Harlem boutique. It wasn’t long before major designers and brands adopted it.

Since then, streetwear has evolved from an esoteric, underground punk culture into a billion-dollar global powerhouse, embraced by major fashion houses worldwide and transcending generational and ethnic boundaries. In 2025, fashion has evolved to accept that we can mix both comfort and style; for that, we have streetwear to thank.

Go Vintage

If you’re new to streetwear, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype of different brands or chasing trends, instead of focusing on the basics. Seek out local vintage clothing stores and make a day of exploring them.

Stock up on the essentials first: bold graphic t-shirts, comfortable, oversized vintage sweaters, baggy jeans, utilitarian cargo pants (cuffed or uncuffed), and shoes that make a statement. Once you’ve assembled an initial collection of wearable street apparel, lean into the types of looks that you prefer. For example, if you enjoy a particular pair of cargo pants, keep an eye out for sweaters, shirts, vests, and shoes that would pair well with them.

Kilo Sales

If you’re frequenting a few different vintage clothing shops, you should also keep your eyes peeled for kilo sales, where you pay for the clothes by the weight, instead of bespoke prices per item. Once you’re there, you’ll be handed a bag and encouraged to fill it before paying a set price per kilogram for the overall haul.

These sales have experienced a surge in popularity in recent years, not only because of their affordability but also because of their sustainable approach, in an industry where low-impact practices have become increasingly rare and fast-fashion processes have ensnared developing countries in unethical production methods.

If you take your time and have a bit of luck here or there, then chances are, you’ll find a few more valuable items at a discount and, with a greater variety available, pick out a few unexpected finds.

Accessories

The most cost-effective way to elevate your streetwear wardrobe is to find affordable, versatile accessories that complement every outfit perfectly. These secret weapons in your arsenal can transform a $50 outfit into one that looks like it costs $200. A clean, well-chosen baseball cap or beanie, a simple chain, a few distinct rings, or even a cheap digital watch will inject your clothes with more personality and be the first thing anyone notices.

You don’t need to build up your own immaculately-kept watch collection, or several designer backpacks – just a curated collection of affordable add-ons that you can have in rotation.

Thrift Wisely

Thrifting can be an absolute treasure trove if you’re looking to grow your streetwear collection on a budget, but it can be time-consuming and requires precise knowledge of what you’re looking for.

But suppose you’re hankering for items in specific niches, like retro sports apparel and vintage designer denim. In that case, you might have better luck thrifting – especially if you’re chasing that distinct worn-in aesthetic.

Although it can take some digging to find what you’re looking for, these finds cost just a fraction of what you would pay in high street stores and vintage shops, so the reward is well worth it. Just bear in mind that you should still be picky: avoid anything that looks like it needs repairing, and remember that, just because something’s cheap, it doesn’t mean that you need to spend your money on it.

Closing Thoughts

If you look on the high street, there is no shortage of options for men’s and women’s streetwear, but more often than not, you will be paying a premium for the privilege. If you don’t want to pay a small fortune, you don’t need to look hard to find vintage streetwear that has that ‘lived in’ feel and harkens back to the style’s true origins at the end of the 20th Century.

Try not to get overwhelmed by the options available to you; build a foundation of the essentials, then mix and match more from there based on what makes you feel your most comfortable and most stylish.
